This study numerically investigates the turbulent flow structure and the distribution of major chemical species in the SM1 non-premixed burner using the steady laminar flamelet model. The aim of thepresent study is to analyze the effect of varying different chemicalmechanisms on the flow structure of the SM1 flame and the distribution of majorchemical species. For this purpose, the GRI-Mech chemicalmechanisms (1.2, 2.11, and 3.0) and a single-step mechanism for methane-air combustion were employed. The results indicate that using the GRI-Mech mechanisms does not produce a significant difference in the distributions of axial/swirl velocity, temperature, mixture fraction, or major species; furthermore, their results show good agreement with experimental data. In contrast, the single-step mechanism substantially under-predicts the temperature, mixturefraction and speciesdistributions. Additionally, the standard k-ε turbulence modeldemonstrates a capableperformance in modeling the first swirling flow behind the bluff body. A 1/7th power law velocity profile was found to be suitable and compatible with the operational conditions of the SM1 flame as a developed flow profile for the fueland swirling air inlets.
