Contact stresses in moving systems have a significant effect on the contact areas. Various factors affect contact stresses, and fatigue, wear and failure are the results of these stresses. In this research, the effects of speed, pressure, and friction coefficient parameters on contact stresses in a linear sliding system have been investigated. In this regard, a cylinder-piston set was simulated and the results were validated using experimental data. The parameters were selected at three different levels and the experiments were designed using the response surface method. The results of the simulations were evaluated using the analysis of variance method. The investigations revealed that the parameters of speed, friction coefficient and pressure have a significant effect on contact stresses, and speed has the greatest effect, while pressure has the least effect on surface stresses. The evaluations also showed that surface stresses are formed from the interaction of thermal and mechanical stresses, and the contribution of thermal stresses is higher than mechanical stresses.
