Abstract
Active vibration control plays a vital role in minimizing vibrations in lightweight structures. A crucial part of this system is the actuator, which applies a control force to minimize vibrations. A commonly used type of actuator is the inertial electromagnetic actuator, which generates force by accelerating a proof mass. Although it has many benefits, its nonlinear behavior when the proof mass reaches its displacement limit can negatively affect vibration attenuation performance. This research first investigates the actuator's force generation mechanism and its nonlinear behavior under displacement saturation. Then, a nonlinear sliding mode control method is implemented on a nonlinear base system. A Luenberger observer estimates the system's disturbance force in order to use in control algorithm. Finally, the controlled structural displacement is compared using both linear velocity feedback control and the sliding mode control method. The results demonstrate improved vibration damping performance, prevention of the proof mass collision with the actuator's casing, and enhanced system stability.
